Brad Spence on Arzu Arda Kosar:
“Arzu Arda Kosar deploys the vertiginious effect of maps the simultaneous qualities of enchantment and terror -as the basis of her installations. In her hands, maps describe abstract forms that are available for fanciful aesthetic play, yet still carry traces of social and political conflict. The map appears to provide an example of a faithful mimetic correspondence between representation and reality. However, Kosar destabilizes this reassuring sense of orientation -both geographic and existential produced by charting and representing our surroundings.
A paradigmatic anxiety of our moment is the sensation of signs that have eclipsed what we formerly considered reality. Kosar’s work dramatizes this crisis by exploding the flat surface of the map into a three-dimensional presence. With the balkanized enclaves of LA county rendered in a blossoming flower bed, we are left to color our locale, as it were, with whatever contentions or poetry we project.”
