Associating with a role model can be quite powerful in youth’s sense of self and self-expression. Convinced that being a good soccer player was a ticket to a better life one teenage boy that we developed a relationship with over the course of our project, not only played for the local junior team but he modeled Beckham as a part of his daily routine. On the street, inside his house, at the schoolyard and while waiting for a bus, he would jump up in the air to block an invisible ball on his chest and quickly crouch on his knees to avoid opponent’s swinging kick, score the goal and gracefully salute the spectators screaming his name. He had consumed every inch of information about David Beckham and internalized it so much so that at times the boundary of between himself and his idol would blur. Wearing his Beckham’s Galaxy uniform, styling his hair like Beckham, mimicking Beckham’s mannerisms, he’d declare,” in 2002 we played with Real Madrid”. This linguistic slippage reflected how much he identified with the famous soccer player.
